The Medical Doctor (MD) for the Roj Camp primary healthcare clinic (PHC) will assist medical staff in the care and treatment of patients in Al Roj refugee camp, Derik, Northeast Syria.  The MD will work under the guidance of the Medical Program Manager (PM) and the Medical Coordinator (MC) to provide high quality dignifying medical care and treatment in the outpatient setting in the camp while also managing emergency medical care and external patient referrals abided by international and local guidelines for provision of clinical care for refugee populations. The MD must be a mature, experienced professional, capable of critical thinking, problem solving, experienced in providing detailed general, pediatric, emergency, chronic disease, and obstetric and gynecological physical assessments, providing care, and capable of making decisions to refer patients to specialized secondary care as necessary. This position requires thorough understanding of care for people in refugee contexts.

The MD is a prominent position on the medical team, and requires an individual with a kind, approachable demeanor who is organized, professional, and experienced in providing medical care, patient education, and counselling to beneficiaries. Excellent teamwork and communication skills are required to excel in this role. 

Hours:
40+ hours per week (field time expected)

Gain thorough understanding of the health needs in refugee populations and approach for dignifying and compassionate care.
•    Familiarize with the organization  Global and national treatment protocols for the target population which primarily consists of women and children from multiple ethnicities.
•    Provide to patients/beneficiaries according to adapted and updated medical knowledge, the org and Syria Government protocols, values and universal infection control standards to improve the patients/beneficiary’s health status.
•    Apply medical knowledge and skills to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases. Carry out consultations as needed, prescribing necessary treatment respecting the org and government protocols.
•    Keep the patient and his/her family informed about the illness and provide appropriate explanation/education about the treatment to follow, verifying that they have understood the treatment plan.
•    Work with staff to ensure care and communication is culturally sensitive.
•    Follow the evolution of patients during course of treatment, through consultations and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment following the organization protocols, deciding whether they can be treated or require specialized care.
•    Arrange appropriate and timely referrals for secondary care referrals allowed by the program scope. Properly document all patient records for internal and external medical audits.
•    Manage emergencies arriving at the clinic and make appropriate decision for referrals.
•    Identify mental and psychological issue among the patients and discuss with the MC/PM about appropriate solutions. Provide basic psychosocial support and patient counseling during consultations.
•    Work in close collaboration with the pharmacist to maintain a steady supply of medicines and medical material at the clinic for uninterrupted services.
•    Support clinic staff to enforce compliance with standard infection prevention and control guidelines.
•    Participate in the accurate clinical documentation and collection of epidemiological data, checking its validity and informing the Medical Coordinator, as appropriate, about any problem or complication of the patients’ illness or medical error(s). 
•    Support the Medical Coordinator in monitoring the proper functioning of the clinic, equipment, supplies, or pharmaceuticals.
•    Ensure patient confidentiality is respected at all times.
•    Support clinical leadership to provide training and mentoring to other clinical staff in dissemination of new knowledge or protocol
•    Assists PM and MC in assessing and developing any additional guidelines, protocols, or standard operating procedures (SoPs) to improve functions of the clinic.

Education / Experience Needed
•    Has necessary requirements/certifications to practice medicine in Syria
•    Has at least 2 years’ experience in hospital or clinic setting
•    Experience in low-resource setting (preferably camps in NES)
