Position Title: PSS Assistant

Location: Syria / Deir Ezzor – Jadid Bakkara.

Reporting to: Protection officer

Direct reports: Non

Number need: 1

Deadline: 29 May 2026

 

Job Profile:

PSS Assistant will be responsible for the implementation of PSS activities including group and individual session under closed supervision from the Protection officer, in addition to psycho-education and outreach sessions to ensure full engagement of the target group. The PSS assistant will operate under technical guidance from protection officer and MHPSS officer and report directly to the Protection Officer.


 

Accountability and Complexity

·      Works under the direct supervision of the MHPSS and Protection Officers, with a defined level of autonomy in delivering assigned PSS activities while adhering strictly to established guidelines, protocols, and safeguarding standards.

·      Handles moderately complex psychosocial support tasks, including individual and group PSS sessions, beneficiary assessments, and follow-up, requiring sensitivity, confidentiality, and adherence to ethical practices.

·      Applies problem-solving skills to address routine challenges related to beneficiary engagement, session logistics, data collection, and coordination, escalating high-risk or complex cases to supervisors as required.

·      Exercises responsibility in managing case-related information, organizing session data, and contributing accurate inputs to reports, ensuring accountability for the quality and reliability of PSS service delivery.

·      Contributes to team coordination and supports the overall effectiveness of PSS programming through active participation in meetings, trainings, and capacity-building activities, without direct managerial authority.

Support to PSS Activities:

·      Conduct individual PSS sessions under the supervision of the MHPSS and Protection Officers.

·      Perform intake and post-session assessments for all PSS beneficiaries to track progress and ensure effective support.

·      Maintain regular communication with Social Assistants and protection assistants to stay updated on cases and coordinate support services.

·      Provide logistical and administrative support to ensure smooth operations of PSS activities in various settings.

·      Support initiatives aimed at improving the quality and accessibility of mental health and psychosocial support services within the community.

·      Participate in workshops to enhance RI’s materials

Support and Coordination:

·      Facilitate group PSS counseling sessions ensuring all facilities and equipment are prepared and functional.

·      Assist in collecting and organizing data on daily PSS activities from outreach locations, PUs, and WGSS.

·      Provide monthly reports to the MHPSS and protection officers detailing the number of beneficiaries receiving PSS services.

·      Participate actively in PSS team meetings to discuss high-risk cases and share experiences while preserving confidentiality.

·      Attend bi-weekly meetings with the MHPSS officer and Protection officer to report on activities, progress, and any challenges faced.

Training and Capacity Building:

·      Engage in training sessions conducted by the MHPSS officer, Protection officer and Protection coordinator.

·      Raise awareness among beneficiaries about available mental health and protection services.

·      Participate in relevant training sessions to enhance skills and knowledge in the field.

·      Support the outreach and awareness team and WGSS/PU staff in understanding and implementing PSS principles effectively.

Skills, knowledge and expertise required for the role.

Essential criteria

·      Bachelor’s degree preferred ideally in social work, psychology, legal or related field.

·      minimum of 1 year experience in running and managing adult group activities.

·      Proven experience in planning and facilitating psychosocial support activities.

·      Familiarity with IASC Guidelines on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support in Emergency Settings

·      knowledge and skills in women rights, child protection, youth/community resilience, psychosocial support,

·      Experience working with at-risk women, girls, children and families

·      Capacity to be discrete and manage confidential information.

·      Must be capable of working both individually and as part of a team.

·      Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, stressful environment.

·      Organized and able to independently manage multiple tasks under strict deadlines.

·      Ability to think critically and creatively.

·      Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Internet Explorer, Outlook/Exchange, Windows operating systems

·      Fluent Arabic language communication skills required (both oral and written)

 

Desirable criteria

·      Knowledge of oral and written English is desirable

·      Proficiency in Excel, is preferred

·      Good analytical, problem-solving skills and attention to details.
