The WASH Worker will work under the direction and supervision of the WASH Program Assistant. S/he is responsible for supporting the implementation of water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) activities by engaging communities, promoting positive hygiene practices, and ensuring inclusive community participation. The role aims to build community ownership, foster behavior change, and ensure that WASH interventions are well understood, accepted, and sustained by the target population.

Field Implementation

 

  • Mobilize communities to actively participate in WASH-related activities, including hygiene promotion, latrine construction, solid waste management, and water source protection.
  • Facilitate hygiene awareness sessions using participatory approaches, especially with women, children, and vulnerable groups.
  • Support the establishment and capacity building of WASH Committees or Hygiene Promoters at the community level.
  • Conduct house-to-house visits, focus group discussions (FGDs), and community meetings to disseminate key WASH messages.
  • Distribute Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials and ensure proper understanding by beneficiaries.
  • Identify and report WASH-related needs, gaps, or protection concerns from the community to the supervisor.
  • Ensure that all activities are inclusive and culturally appropriate, considering gender, age, disability, and other diversities.
  • Coordinate with local authorities and community leaders to ensure smooth implementation of activities.
  • Assist in monitoring activities, conducting baseline/endline surveys, and collecting community feedback for learning and accountability.
  • Prepare timely and accurate field reports and success stories for documentation.
  • Participate in the development of monitoring tools for water safety management plan.
  • Support in collecting and organizing information on progress of all aspects of rehabilitation activities ensuring information is disaggregated by gender and age (men, women, boys and girls).     
  • Prepare and submit weekly and monthly reports as requested by WASH Program Assistant verbally on written.
  • In collaboration with the WASH team and MEAL team, monitor the impact of the program activities on the beneficiaries.
  • Fully participate in any learning reviews, ensuring that final recommendations are shared with the relevant team members and eventually incorporated into program activities.
  • Provide regular updates to the WASH Program Assistant and team on progress, priorities, and constraints, both verbally and in written form.
  • Represent the organization to local partners, governmental and non-governmental groups as requested. 
  • Coordinate with all organization’s teams to identify and implement integrated response when applicable.

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, environmental health, community development, social sciences, or related field.
  • Minimum of 1–2 years of experience in community mobilization or hygiene promotion, preferably within WASH projects.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage respectfully with communities.
  • Experience in conducting community meetings, household visits, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs).
  • Familiarity with the local context, culture, and language/dialect.
  • Knowledge of participatory hygiene promotion approaches (e.g., PHAST, CHAST, CLTS).
  • Ability to deliver hygiene awareness sessions tailored to different age, gender, and literacy levels.
  • Skills in adapting hygiene messaging to local culture and context.
  • Experience in organizing and facilitating community meetings, focus group discussions (FGDs), and household visits.
  • Ability to form and support WASH committees, hygiene clubs, or user groups.
  • Capacity to manage community dynamics and resolve conflict or resistance to WASH interventions.
  • Understanding of behavioral drivers related to hygiene and sanitation.
  • Application of BCC principles to design and deliver effective messaging.
  • Use of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials and tools.
  • Basic understanding of how to promote or supervise safe latrine construction or handwashing station use.
  • Ability to recognize and report technical issues with WASH facilities (e.g., damaged water points, unsafe latrines).
  • Experience using Kobo Toolbox, ODK, or other digital tools for surveys, observations, and beneficiary feedback.
  • Conducting baseline, endline, or KAP (Knowledge, Attitudes, Practices) assessments.
  • Monitoring use and functionality of WASH facilities in coordination with engineers or technical teams.
  • Knowledge of how to ensure safe, dignified, and inclusive access to WASH services.
  • Identifying and referring protection-related concerns to the appropriate team.
  • Ensuring WASH facilities are safe for women, children, and persons with disabilities.
  • Ability to write field visit reports, capture success stories, and contribute to project documentation.
  • Basic skills in Excel and Word for reporting and tracking activities.
  • Knowledge of community-based WASH programming and behavior change communication 
  • Experience working with local authorities, CBOs, or INGOs in WASH-related programming.
  • Commitment to humanitarian principles, child safeguarding, and accountability to affected populations (AAP).
